“This muscular early 90s cover of The Fourmyula’s pastoral 1969 classic (voted best NZ song in 75 years by the songwriters’ association APRA in 2001) comes from the self-titled debut album by Don McGlashan’s band The Mutton Birds. The award winning music video was directed by Fane Flaws — the first of six he made with them (after previously working with McGlashan on The Front Lawn’s Beautiful Things clip). Guest vocalist Jan Hellriegel features amongst the battery of kaleidoscopic and psychedelic digital effects used to evoke the joys of nature.” (http://www.nzonscreen.com/title/nature-1992)
“‘Nature’ was written in the height of 1960s pop culture. The fashion was shoulder-length hair, exotically motley dressing and expanding the mind. Mason’s song echoed the psychedelic, pastoral imagery of the times with lyrics like ‘turning breeze to speech’ and ‘nature’s own voice I hear’, but the Fourmyula never identified with the so-called counter-culture. ‘We were just a bunch of well-adjusted teenagers in love. I wrote “Nature” in an hour on the front porch of my mum’s house, looking out on a beautiful day with trees and stuff. Bees were buzzing and my heart was fluttering,’ Mason recalled” (http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/media/photo/wayne-mason-and-the-song-nature)

The lyrics and the time period provided inspiration for the mood board. I took the interpretation literally in terms of the aspects of imagery that the song talked about such as the sunlight, leaves falling and dew and then branched out to other aspects of nature from this. I also looked into the time period of the song, the 60s and the imagery and styling of the time and also took inspiration from the psychedelic patterns in the music video, I was interested to see how these patterns also occur in nature. Such as in the middle of a sunflower or a pinecone.Attached is a link to my mood board on Pinterest : http://www.pinterest.com/larajaynec/nature-mood-board/

“Through falling leaves
I pick my way slowly
Talking aloud
Eases my my mind

Sunlight filters through
I fell my head is drifting
So full of thoughts
I’ve thought of

What am i gonna do
I need some thoughts that are new

Do do do do dodo dodooo
Do do do dodo dooo
Do do dit do do do ditdo dooo
Nature into me!

Up in a tree
A bird sings so sweetly
Nature’s own voice
I hear

Rustling rustling leaves
Turning breeze to speech
Call to me now
Ease my mind

I’ll turn something new
Minds layed with dew

Do do do do dodo dodooo
Do do do dodo dooo
Do do do do do do ditdo dooo
Nature into me!

I’ll turn something new
Minds layed with dew

Do do do do dodo dodooo
Do do do dodo dooo
Do do do do do do ditdo dooo
Nature into me! (Yeah!)

Do do do do dodo dodooo
Do do do dodo dooo
Do do do do do do ditdo dooo
